High School Fraternities and Sororities in DC

Greetings! My name is Rashid Darden and I am a published writer and Washington, DC native. I am currently working on a major nonfiction book that I am tentatively called Joining Society: A Survey of the Black Membership Organization Experience in the District of Columbia, 1825-2020.

This book will be all about the fraternal, sororal, masonic, social, and civic organizations in which black Washingtonians were involved for nearly two hundred years.

I have come across a small number of high school fraternities and sororities in my research: Sigma Beta Upsilon in Northwest DC in the 1970s, and Alpha Omega Young Men’s Association and Sigma Rho Upsilon Sorority at H.D. Woodson High School in the 1980s and 90s.

Were you part of one of these groups, or perhaps another one? If so, I’d love to speak to you about your experiences. Please contact me using the form below.
