General Fraternities and Sororities
General fraternities and sororities (also known as social fraternities and sororities) are those intercollegiate Greek Letter Organizations (GLOs) that have social characteristics, a selection process based on tangible and intangible criteria, and may select members regardless of their course of study. With few exceptions, one may belong to only one general fraternity or sorority.
Note: Some organizations listed here are social fellowships rather than fraternities or sororities. Several organizations do not use Greek nomenclature.

Professional Fraternities and Sororities
A professional fraternity or sorority is an organization for men, women, or both, who possess or are in pursuit of a career in a particular professional field. Some professional fraternities and sororities are intercollegiate, and others strictly exist in the communities in which they serve. While it is possible to be a member of more than one professional fraternity or sorority in different careers, it is unusual–and more often than not, prohibited–to be a dual member of organizations serving the same profession.

A Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning/Same Gender Loving fraternity or sorority is a Greek Letter Organization which exists for service and fellowship within those communities. It should be noted that the women’s organizations are often (but not always) separated by gender expression, with masculine of center (MOC) women often joining women’s fraternities.
This list does not include non-Greek letter LGBT societies, which have their own section.

Christian Fraternities and Sororities
Christian Fraternities and Sororities are organizations that Christians may join in order to profess their love for Christ, fellowship with like-minded Christians, and glorify God through community service. Some Christian Fraternities and Sororities consider themselves ministries unto themselves, while others see themselves as auxiliaries in service to their local churches.
Some Christian Fraternities and Sororities allow dual membership with general or social fraternities and sororities, while others do not. Most do not allow dual membership with other Christian Fraternities and Sororities. While several of these groups are intercollegiate, many more are community based or non-collegiate.
